How It ShinesA Lichtenberg figure consists of billions of microscopic fractures in solid crystal-clear acrylic. These crystallized channels capture and redirect any light that strikes them, which makes the image appear to shine. Consequently, the appearance of the figure depends greatly on the lighting conditions around it.Our PhotosOur Lichtenberg figure photo was taken under recommended lighting conditions: a darkened room, a dark background, and an ordinary halogen lamp directed into an edge of the sculpture. When you first unpack your sculpture, it will probably not look at all
like the photo because it will not have optimal illumination. However,
you can easily achieve the same effect with proper lighting.
Display to Your PreferencesIt is also interesting to note that the apparent size and density of the figure varies dramatically with the intensity and proximity of the light source. The entire sculpture is packed with channels which are invisible until sufficient light is directed on them.We adjusted the lighting for our photo to show just the number of channels which we felt would be attractive. Higher light levels will make the figure appear much denser. So not only is the sculpture one of a kind, your creativity in how you
display and illuminate it will make it even more unique and impressive.
Presentation FactorsAs with any other work of art you can greatly enhance the natural beauty of your sculpture by appropriate presentation. The most important factors in displaying your sculpture are:
IlluminationIlluminate directly into an edge of the sculpture with a high-intensity desk lamp. Halogen lamps seem to work best. A more focused lamp illuminates the channels inside while minimizing distracting reflections from the surface of the acrylic.
Ambient LightNo or low room lighting makes an illuminated Lichtenberg figure shine brightly. You can also display it in a corner, bookcase, alcove, display case, or shadow box, to enhance its beauty.BackgroundEmphasize the subtle and delicate ghostly image by displaying your Lichtenberg figure against a black background, the blacker the better. Also, keep the surface in front of the sculpture as dark as possible to prevent reflection. Here are some background ideas:
